We are a faith community in Virginia Beach where absolutely every single person is welcome and accepted. Our active congregation is immersed in God’s call to joyfully serve our neighbors in need, stand with our neighbors  experiencing injustice, and support families raising the next generation. Micah 5:2-5a; Matthew 2:1-6 In contrast to some of the grander carols bursting forth glory to God in the highest, Rev. Phillips Brooks wanted to write something peaceful and soothing. The Civil War had just ended and Brooks had just spoken at President Lincoln’s unexpected funeral. Exhausted, Brooks thought he would renew himself in the Holy Land and found himself in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve. A few years later he would write this children’s song and the intimacy of that holy birth. This soothing hymn becomes personal in the later stanzas, eventually becoming a prayer. Might this be your prayer, “O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel”? Reflection Questions: Do you prefer the soft, peaceful carols like this one or the louder more joyful ones? Where have been places that you experienced renewal? What is your prayer to the Christ child on this Christmas Eve Day?

Matthew 22:37-39; Hebrews 12:1-2 At the first service of the newly chartered King’s Grant Presbyterian Church, the scripture read was Matthew 22, Jesus teaching about the two greatest commandments. KGPC has been loving God and neighbor through service ever since. We will trace that self-giving service over the past 60 years as we give thanks for the “cloud of witnesses” who have gone before us and the many ways God has used us to be a blessing in this community. How different would the King’s Grant community be if KGPC had never existed? Thank God we never have to find out. Reflection Questions: Who are the great “cloud of witnesses” who have been part of your life? What are the ways you make time to show your love for God? What are ways you make time to show you love for your neighbor?

John 4:1-42 In the final eighth episode “I Am He,” Jesus goes out of his way to make sure he is at a specific well at a specific time to meet a specific woman. He chose her to reveal himself publicly for the first time. Why? They have a lengthy discussion about worship where he says that worship is not about place but about the heart. Worship is about spirit and truth, not about logistics of time, place, and style. How might his teaching still resonate with us today? But only when he specifically tells her about her past does she come to believe. What is it that leads us to believe? Reflection Question: What was the significance of Jesus revealing his identity for the first time to a Samaritan woman? Why do you think he chose her? In what ways does their conversation about worship influence your thoughts about worship today? Have you ever been as excited as that woman to tell others about Jesus? If Jesus told you “everything that you have ever done,” what would he say to you?
